W.R.Meyers Co as an ongoing steward of St. Augies's Church
With a lovely slender steeple, St. Augustine Catholic Church and school, in Napoleon Ohio stands along the Maumee River. The structure was built in 1883, mainly by parishioners, for the delightfully low cost of $21,893. In 1976 W.R. Meyers Company started work on the steeple structure, improving the steeple tie-downs and framing, painting of the exterior sheet metal, louvers and slate repairs. From 1978 to 1981 we completed further masonry repairs as well as tree trimming and window repairs and painting.
“St. Augustines was the first steeple that I worked on in 1976 so its always great to return to do more work on that facility. ”
In 2014 we repaired the roof and installed flashing on the sanctuary and steeple. In 2015 and 2016 the team worked on the inside and outside of the steeple upper inside area and a complete outside restoration was done. In 2016 and 2017 we cleaned the brick and stone on the north side and the east end of the exterior of the sanctuary. In 2018 we did major repair work to the two main chimneys on the sanctuary and structural work on the masonry brickwork and beams at the front of the church above the main stained glass windows.
“When I was first working on the steeple in 1976 the homecoming parade was coming through the downtown and the whole town was a bit smoky with burning fall leaves… Football players and the band, winding through the town set up this amazing picture of Americana at its best. Seeing it from the top of the steeple was absolutely so special”
